Patrick J. Kennedy was born in Brighton, Mass., the youngest of three children of Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy and Joan Bennett Kennedy. He resides in Portsmouth.

Kennedy attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. He received a bachelor's degree in social science from Providence College in 1991. Kennedy served in the Rhode Island House, 1988-94. During his final term, Kennedy served as chairman of the House Rules Committee.

He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1994.

Kennedy is single and has no children.
