James Langevin was born in Providence. When he was 16 years old, he was accidentally shot while working as a police cadet, leaving him paralyzed and in a wheelchair.
Langevin graduated from Rhode Island College and went on to earn a master's degree in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
He is single and has no children.
