James Gresham Barrett grew up in Westminster, S.C. After graduation from the town's high school, he went to The Citadel, earning a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1983. He became a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army after graduation and completion of Army Airborne School and was an artillery officer.
He resigned his commission as a captain in 1987 to run the family's furniture business, Barrett's Furniture. He served three terms in the South Carolina House, beginning in 1997, and voters elected him to the U.S. House in 2002.
He and his wife, Natalie, have three children.
