Linda Ketner was born in Faith, N.C., a few miles south of Salisbury, N.C. She now resides in Charleston. She earned a Master's in sociology at University of North Carolina-Greensboro and a bachelor's in English at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Ketner is the founder of a company specializing in leadership and management development. Previously she worked with SmithKline Corp. and was Food Lion's organizational development director. She is the daughter of Food Lion founder Ralph Ketner.

Ketner has also worked as a high school teacher and as an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston.

She has ties to nonprofit and environmental groups in Charleston and she is a business and nonprofit consultant. Ketner founded South Carolina Citizens For Housing, Alliance for Full Acceptance, and the South Carolina Equality Coalition. She is also a gay activist.
