Stephen Ira Cohen, a lifelong Memphis resident, graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville in 1971 and from the University of Memphis law school in 1973. He goes by the first name "Steve."

He was elected to the Tennessee Constitutional Convention in 1977, to the Shelby County Commission in 1978 and to the county lawmaking board until 1980. He also was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1980, 1992 and 2004.

He served in the state Senate for 24 years and unsuccessfully challenged Harold Ford Jr. for a U.S. House seat in 1996.

He is single with no children.
