Gerard Donovan is a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Windsor, Ontario.
Donovan dropped out of high school and joined the Marines when he was 17. He later earned his high school degree and rose to the rank of sergeant before leaving the Marines in 1978.
Donovan is an electrical engineer who runs his own consulting firm, Quality Practitioners, Inc. He points to his varied experience that prepared him to run his company. He has worked as a car wash attendant, a janitor at the Salvation Army, in a steel mill and in an electronics firm.
Donovan is challenging incumbent Democrat Rep. Jim Cooper in Tennessee's 5th Congressional District.
Donovan and his wife Marti have three children.
