James "Jim" Hayes Shofner Cooper is a former Rhodes Scholar who earned his law degree at Harvard. The son of former Gov. Prentice Cooper, he was raised in Shelbyville, Tenn., and now lives in Nashville.

He earned a bachelor's degree in history and economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1975. He earned degrees in politics and economics from Oxford University. He earned his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1980.

Cooper served a dozen years in the U.S. House before his tour as 4th District representative ended with an unsuccessful bid for the Senate in 1994. He returned to the House winning the 5th District seat in 2002.

He and his wife, Martha, have three children.
