Robert "Rob" Asbury Russell is a native of Knoxville. He earned his master's degree in English from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1993 and his undergraduate degree in English and history from East Tennessee State University in 1991.
Russell is a musician and the director of the East Tennessee State University's Writing and Communication Center in Kingsport.
Russell and his wife, Tracey A. Berry, have two children.
