About The Candidate

Education

  • George Washington University, JD
  • University of Tennessee, BA

John James "Jimmy" Duncan Jr. was born in Lebanon, Tenn., but raised in Knoxville, where he still lives. He received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Tennessee in 1969 and a law degree from George Washington University in 1973.

Duncan served in the Tennessee Army National Guard and the U.S. Army reserve. He practiced law from 1973 to 1981 and was appointed a state criminal court judge from 1981 to 1988.

Duncan was elected to the historically GOP seat in 1988. He succeeded his father, who was in office for almost 25 years.

The elder Duncan announced in May 1988 that he was stepping down. He died of cancer a month later.

A special election to fill the remainder of the elder Duncan's term came in November, along with the general election for the next full term. The younger Duncan won them both over Democrat Dudley Taylor, a former state revenue commissioner.

Duncan, an attorney and former Knox County criminal court judge, has been re-elected against little or no opposition since.

He and his wife, Lynn, have four children.
