Mike Conaway was born in Borger, Texas, and now lives in Midland.
Conaway graduated from Odessa Permian High School in 1966 and East Texas State University in 1970 with a degree in accounting.He served in the Army from 1970 to 1972 and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas.
He worked at Price Waterhouse in the 1970s and moved to Midland in 1979. He was a chief financial officer for two oil companies in the early 1980s.
Conaway was a business partner with George W. Bush from 1982 to 1986, serving as chief financial officer of Arbusto Energy Inc., which later became Bush Exploration Inc. and then merged with Spectrum 7 Energy Corp. before being sold to Harken Energy.Conaway then worked for a bank until starting his own accounting practice in 1993.
In 1995 Conaway was appointed by then-Gov. Bush to the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, where he served seven years.
He has been a board member of the Texas Society of CPAs since 1974 and is the immediate past chairman of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy.
In 1990, he was named "volunteer of the decade" by the community services branch of the Midland YMCA.
He was elected to the U.S. House in 2004.
Conaway and his wife, Suzanne, have four children.
