John Culberson was born and raised in Houston and lives in the Copperfield subdivision in west Harris County. A 1975 graduate of Lamar High School in Houston, he earned a bachelor's degree in history from Southern Methodist University in 1981, then received a law degree from the South Texas College of Law in 1990.
He was elected to the first of seven, two-year terms in the Texas House in 1986, while in law school. He has been a lawyer for the Lorance and Thompson firm, where he is a senior associate.
He was elected to the U.S. House in 2000.
Culberson and his wife, Belinda, have one daughter, Caroline.
