Chet Edwards was born in Corpus Christi and lives in Waco. He received a bachelor's degree in economics in 1974 from Texas A&M University and a master's degree in business administration from Harvard in 1981.

He was an aide to then-U.S. Rep. Olin Teague in 1974. Edwards worked as a marketing representative for the Trammell Crow Co. He was elected to the state Senate in 1982 and was re-elected in 1986.

He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1990.

He is married to Lea Ann Edwards and has two children.
