Kay Granger was born in Greenville, Texas, and resides in Fort Worth. Granger graduated from Texas Wesleyan University in 1965 and worked as a teacher for 10 years, including at Richland High School and the Birdville School District.

In 1985, Granger began her insurance agency and became chairwoman of the Fort Worth zoning commission.

Granger also served from 1989 to 1991 on the Fort Worth City Council.

In 1991, Granger was elected nonpartisan mayor of Fort Worth, the first woman to earn the job. She was re-elected in 1993 and 1995.

Granger defeated another previous Fort Worth mayor in her 1996 election to the U.S. House as a Republican.

She was the first Republican woman from Texas elected to the U.S. House. Her win was a coup for the party because it had previously been served by former House Speaker Jim Wright, a Democrat.

She has three children and is divorced.
