Tracey Smith is a native of Fort Worth, where he now works as a commercial real estate broker. He earned a bachelor's in economics at University of Texas in 1970 and a master's in journalism at Ohio State University in 1974.

Smith started his career in journalism, working at a newspaper and then as a television news reporter, before going into the real estate business in 1984.

He had two unsuccessful bids for public office for a Fort Worth City Council seat in 1998 and for a Tarrant Regional Water District Board seat in 2006. Both were nonpartisan races. He also has served as a precinct chairman for the Democratic Party.

Smith is a widower and has two grown stepdaughters. He married again recently and now has two more stepchildren.
