John Cornyn was in Houston and now lives in Austin. The son of a World War II pilot who became an Air Force dentist, the younger Cornyn graduated from high school in Japan, where his father was stationed in 1969.

Cornyn is a 1973 graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio, where he earned a degree in journalism after growing discouraged with pre-med courses.

After graduation, Cornyn worked as a waiter while he pursued a real estate license. He worked as a real estate salesman for a brief period before entering law school.

In 1977, Cornyn graduated from St. Mary's School of Law in San Antonio and joined the law firm of Groce, Locke and Hebdon. He specialized in defending doctors and insurance companies in medical malpractice lawsuits and eventually made partner.

In 1984 he was elected Bexar County district court judge and re-elected in 1988. He was appointed a presiding judge of the 4th Administrative Judicial Region by then-Gov. Bill Clements in 1989.

He was elected a Supreme Court Justice in 1990 and re-elected in 1996. He was elected Texas Attorney General in 1999 and served until 2002, when he ran for the Senate and won.

Cornyn and his wife, Sandra, have two daughters.
