On the Issues
By summer 2011, it is predicted, Northern Virginia could be facing blackouts due to its growing demand for energy. Should Congress intervene now to prevent that possibility, and if so, what is the most important single step it could take?
Yes. America must be energy independent and energy secure.
We must drill on the outer continental shelf, develop Rocky Mountain Basin oil shale, expand our use of nuclear power and build clean coal fired plants that produce no sulfur dioxide or carbon dioxide.
We must also develop renewable energy sources like solar, wind and geothermal.
What impact does immigration have on your district?
As with many districts, the impact of immigration in the 11th is significant.
My great grandparents came to this country, learned our language and assimilated into the “melting pot.” This is a great strength of our country and I welcome legal immigrants who want to play by the rules and share the American dream.
Legal immigration only works with secure borders so we must regain control of them. In the age of nuclear terrorism, nothing less is acceptable. Congress must address this problem immediately.
What steps, if any, should the federal government take to address funding issues for transportation projects?
Federal tax dollars expended on local transportation projects must be spent far more efficiently than government has demonstrated. It is unimaginable that the Big Dig in Boston went from $2 billion to $15 billion and then increased to $22 billion when interest was included.
With this bitter lesson in mind, it is even less imaginable that Dulles rail would not be rigorously bid and not simply awarded to Bechtel -- the very company that fleeced taxpayers in Boston. With today’s cost modeling, why can’t those bidding Dulles rail submit flat fee pricing so that overages are eaten by the contractor?
Why should voters elect you?
Career politicians look after their special interests and seek to be served. As a common sense, nonpartisan businessman, I can move our economy forward again.
What is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?
The economy. Fueled by unacceptably high gas prices and out-of-control federal, state and local spending, families are squeezed, and economic recovery is threatened. Reckless spending is not a Republican or Democratic issue -- both parties are guilty. Americans are suffering because elected officials are more concerned with their careers than the public good. As a trained accountant, entrepreneur and businessman, I know how to create jobs, operate within a budget, do more with less -- as any business must -- and accept the discipline of the marketplace. We should expect as much of our elected leaders.
