Anita Hartke was born in Georgetown, D.C. and grew up in Fairfax County, Va. She earned a psychology degree from Salem College in Salem, W.Va. She is a real estate broker.
She is the daughter of the late Sen. Vance Hartke, an Indiana Democrat who served from 1959 to 1977 and briefly sought his party's presidential nomination in 1972.
This is Hartke's first run for office.
Hartke lives with her mother and son, and has another son and a daughter attending Virginia colleges.
