On the Issues
What is the most urgent problem facing your district?
The need for a comprehensive energy policy, which includes drilling domestically for oil. As the child of working-class parents, I learned early on about the challenges families face every day. Today, as working families struggle to survive Americans have recognized our need for energy independence. By restricting our nation's ability to drill for oil and gas for over 30 years, Washington politicians have made us dependent on foreign oil from hostile sources. The answer to skyrocketing gas prices and high costs of everything from milk to baby food can be attributed to Washington's wrongheaded response to our energy needs.
Why should voters elect you?
I keep my word. I oppose federal tax increases. I support an energy plan that includes conservation, alternative energy, coal and increased domestic oil production.
For each of the below questions, select an answer and briefly explain your answer.
Would you support more funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport illegal immigrants?
a) No
b) Yes
c) Undecided
Yes. We must secure our borders. And, we must insist our immigration laws be enforced. We are a nation of immigrants. Immigrants from all over the world have been extremely important to the development and the success of our nation so we should continue to respect them and be open to reforms that address our workforce needs.
Do you support the construction of a tunnel for the Tysons Corner portion of the metrorail extention to Dulles Airport?
a) No
b) Yes
YES.
Should the next president push for a time table for troop withdrawal from Iraq?
a) No
b) Yes
c) Undecided
No. I served as a member of U.S. Army counter-intelligence unit in Germany during the Vietnam Era. As a veteran, I am strongly committed to supporting America’s troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world. As a supporter of the troop surge, I believe our goal in Iraq must be defined in terms of America’s national interest.
Would you support a bill that recognized civil unions and same-sex partnerships?
a) No
b) Yes
c) Should be decided at state level
No. Throughout my public life, I have supported the preservation of traditional family values. I believe marriage is the union between one man and one woman and I was a supporter of Virginia’s Marriage Amendment.
Would you support a bill to lift the moratorium on offshore oil drilling?
a) No
b) Yes
c) Should be decided at state level
Yes. We are a nation in need of an American Declaration of Independence from Foreign Oil. Making the U.S. more energy independent should be a top priority. Our continued dependence on foreign oil is having great negative impact on our economy, national security and foreign policy. We need to increase exploration and drilling for gas and oil off our coasts and in Alaska. Drilling for more oil domestically will reduce gas prices for working families.
Who do you endorse to be the next president of the United States?
a) Republican John McCain
b) Democrat Barack Obama
Republican John McCain.
The government should guarantee a basic benefit package to all that includes preventive care.
a) Agree
b) Disagree
Disagree. Every American deserves access to affordable, high-quality and reliable health care. In order to achieve this goal, I support a broad range of health care reform measures including tax reform to help people buy health insurance and maintain health savings accounts; making it easier for small businesses to provide health care for their employees by allowing them to form Association Health Plans; implementing medical liability reforms to reduce frivolous lawsuits and bring down health care costs; improving health information technology to decrease medical errors and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of medical treatments and our overall health care system.”
