He headed the state's Young Republicans, was Gov. Richard Snelling's top aide and won a seat in the state House. He served as secretary of state for 12 years beginning in 1981.
He challenged U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Democrat, in 1992 and lost. He returned to office two years later, winning the first of four terms as state treasurer.
He was elected governor in 2002.
Re-elected in 2004 by a landslide, Douglas opted out of another run for the U.S. Senate when Sen. James Jeffords announced in April 2005 that he would retire after the 2006 elections. Douglas considered the race for a few weeks and then chose to seek re-election.
Douglas and his wife, Dorothy, have two sons.
