Adam Smith was born in Washington, D.C., and resides in Tacoma. He graduated from Tyee High School in Seatac, Wash., and received a bachelor's degree from Fordham University in 1987 and a law degree from the University of Washington in 1990.

He practiced law and served in the Washington Senate, 1990-96, where he was chairman of the Senate judiciary panel.

He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1996.

Smith is married to Sara Bickle-Eldridge, and has two children.
