Jay Inslee was born and raised in Seattle and now lives on Bainbridge Island. He attended Stanford University and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington and a law degree from Willamette University in Oregon.

Inslee practiced law in Selah, a small community near Yakima in central Washington. Inslee served in the Washington House from 1988 to 1992.

He was elected to the U.S. House in 1992, representing the 4th congressional District in Eastern Washington, but was defeated in 1994.

He lost a bid for the Democratic nomination for governor in 1996 and spent two years as regional director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, before leaving in 1998 to campaign for the 1st Congressional District in the Seattle suburbs. He won that race.

Inslee and his wife, Trudi, have three sons.
