Joe Manchin was born and raised in Farmington, Marion County. The 1965 graduate of Farmington High School won a football scholarship to attend West Virginia University, but an injury ended his athletic ambitions.

Manchin received an undergraduate degree in business and economics from WVU in 1970. He operated a chain of family-owned retail stores and currently has a stake in Enersystems, which has brokered coal and has conducted other business involving natural resources.

Manchin handed off day-to-day operations of Enersystems to his son after he was elected secretary of state in 2000.

He was elected governor in 2004.

Manchin and his wife, Gayle, have three children.
