Russ Weeks, 66, was born in Beckley, W.Va. where he still lives. He dropped out of high school to join the U.S. Navy in 1958 and served for 20 years, including combat tours during the Vietnam War.

Weeks won a surprise victory over state Sen. Bill Wooton in 2002, and represented Raleigh County until 2006, when Weeks' re-election bid failed.

Weeks and his wife, Helen, have two adult children.
