Nick Joe Rahall II was born in Beckley, W.Va., and still resides there. He graduated from Beckley's Woodrow Wilson High School in 1967. He received a bachelor's degree in 1971 from Duke University. He completed graduate work at George Washington University in 1972.
He worked as a sales representative for a West Virginia radio station. He was president of the Mountaineer Tour and Travel Agency and served as president of West Virginia Broadcasting.
Rahall was first elected to the U.S. House in 1976.
Rahall, who is divorced, has three children.
