Anne Barth, 50, was born in Bluefield, W.Va. and currently resides in Charleston, W.Va. The daughter of a United Methodist minister, she grew up in parsonages around the state. She graduated from West Virginia University with a bachelor's degree in journalism and later earned a master's degree in communications from the same school. She was a longtime aide to U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd.
Barth beat two challengers in the May 13 Democratic primary. She has not previously run for office.
Barth and her husband, Nick, have two daughters.
