Nick Carter was born in Midland, Texas and currently lives in Gillette, Wyo. The youngest of nine children, Carter's family moved to Wyoming when he was 6 because of his father's job in the energy industry.
He graduated from high school in Gillette. He received his undergraduate degree in English from Oklahoma State University and a law degree from the University of Wyoming. He eventually opened his own law practice there in 1991. From 1995 to 1998, Cater served as a special deputy prosecuting attorney.
He has one child with his former wife.
