Richardson withdrew his name from consideration Jan. 4 amid a federal grand jury investigation into how one of his political contributors won a state contract. He was the third Democratic presidential candidate to be invited to join Obama's team, following Vice President Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Now serving his second term as governor of New Mexico, Richardson is a former member of Congress, U.N. ambassador and energy secretary.
