A four-star general and 38-year veteran who retired shortly after the fall of Baghdad in 2003, Shinseki ran afoul of the Bush administration by questioning the Iraq war strategy while he was Army chief of staff. Widely respected by military leaders and veterans, he is described as a soft-spoken, dynamic leader and was twice awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Vietnam. Shinseki led the Army at the same time National Security Adviser James L. Jones commanded the Marines.
