Mabus, a Navy veteran, was an early supporter of the Obama campaign, signing on in mid-2007 as the campaign's Middle East advisor. His experience: the Clinton-appointed ambassador to Saudi Arabia for two tumultuous years in the 1990s. He is best known as the former governor of Mississippi, who spearheaded education reform in that state in the 1980s.
