Christopher Lee Burford, of Hubert, N.C., joined the Navy shortly after finishing high school. The 23-year-old started his career at the Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill.

He then moved to the Fleet Training Center in Norfolk for a three-month stint before joining the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations Telecommunications Center at the Pentagon in June 2000. Burford, a petty officer third class, was an electronics technician.
