FOWLER, Wyche, Jr., a Representative and a Senator from Georgia; born in Atlanta, Ga., October 6, 1940; attended the public schools; graduated, Davidson College 1962; graduated, Emory University School of Law 1969; served as a United States Army intelligence officer 1963-1964; chief of staff for Representative Charles Weltner 1965-1966; attorney 1969-1977; Atlanta board of aldermen 1970-1973; president, Atlanta city council 1974-1977; elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-fifth Congress on April 5, 1977, by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Andrew Young; reelected to the four succeeding Congresses (April 6, 1977-January 3, 1987); was not a candidate for reelection to the House of Representatives in 1986, but was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1986; defeated for reelection on November 11, 1992, general election runoff and served from January 3, 1987, to January 3, 1993; appointed Senate liaison to the Federal Election Commission 1993; resigned as FEC liaison and resumed the practice of law in 1993; named Ambassador to Saudi Arabia by President William J. Clinton, August 12, 1996, confirmed October 27, 1997; is a resident of Atlanta, Ga. (Source.)
