Rockefeller and Walter F. Mondale, 1976-1977; deputy secretary, California State Department of Business, Transportation and Housing, 1977-1980, secretary, 1980-1983; attorney in private practice, 1983-1993; California co-chair for the presidential campaign of Michael S. Dukakis in 1988; commissioner and vice chair, San Diego unified port district, 1990-1993; elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Third Congress (January 3, 1993-January 3, 1995); unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Fourth Congress.
