item veto

Defined
Sometimes referred to as a line-item veto, it is the authority to reject a part of an appropriations or tax bill instead of all of it. Congress gave the president this power in 1996 but a federal judge struck it down and in 1998 the Supreme Court ruled it was unconstitutional.
