Blue Dog Democrat

Defined
A group of 44 moderate-to-conservative Democrats in the House of Representatives who believed their opinions were “choked blue” by their party in the years preceding the 1994 congressional election.

HISTORY
In 1995, after the term "Yellow Dog Democrat" - a moniker for Southern party loyalists - formed and appeared on the Democratic ballot, these Democrats joined together to form the Blue Dog Coalition.
