Yellow Dog Democrat
Defined
Some southern voters in the late 19th and early 20th century would vote for Democrats, largely to retaliate against the Republican Party’s positions during the Civil War. The name originated from a southerner who said he would vote for a yellow dog before he would vote for a Republican.
