American Capital last year became the area's biggest business development company, overtaking its downtown rival Allied Capital Corp. Placing loans and investments at a blistering pace in 2005, American Capital's total portfolio stood at $3.2 billion in loans and direct equity investments in a wide variety of private companies.
The company has expanded into energy investing and has established a European fund to invest in middle-market buyouts.
American Capital in 2006 plans to build on a plan laid out last year, in which the company will become a publicly traded manager of private investments. In essence, American Capital will be moving more of its investment portfolio "off balance sheet" by selling or sourcing the investments to third-party investors. The company's income will come from management fees and a cut of the profits from the investments. American Capital is considering launching several industry-specific investment funds that it will manage. Its European fund, a portion of which was sold to third-party investors, is a prime example of the strategy.
