Anteon announced in December 2005 that it would be bought by General Dynamics Corp. for $2.2 billion, including $116 million in debt. The proposed deal was the largest involving a local government contractor in 2005 and set off speculation that other mid-sized contractors could be acquired. As of late April, the Anteon-General Dynamics deal was still awaiting antitrust approval from the Justice Department.
Anteon reported $1.49 billion in revenue last year, up from $1.26 billion in 2004. It also added two new board members: retired Gen. Paul J. Kern, the former commander of the Army Materiel Command; and Michael T. Smith, former chairman of the board and chief executive of Hughes Electronics Corp. Anteon also made an acquisition of its own in 2005, agreeing to pay $31.5 million for Milestone Group LLC, a privately held Arlington firm. Milestone receives most of its revenue from the Missile Defense Agency.
