Booz Allen continues to be a major beneficiary of the homeland security boom. Last year, for example, the company won a $250 million contract with the research and development arm of the Department of Homeland Security.
Helping government and corporate clients prepare for and handle disasters is one of the firm's specialties. After last year's Hurricane Katrina disaster, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers used a Web-based command system developed by Booz Allen to coordinate its emergency response.
Other new contracts for the firm last year brought in business from diverse clients including the U.S. Air Force and the National Cancer Institute. Total sales for 2005 grew to $3.6 billion, up from $3.1 billion the year before.
News-generating studies from the firm included a report claiming that Internet sources produced 51 percent of all job hires in 2005. One 2004 report from the company came under attack last year, when the Federal Communications Commission issued a study disputing some of Booz Allen's findings that pay-by-the-channel, or "a la carte," cable TV pricing would make cable subscriptions more expensive. The consultancy admitted to some errors in the report but stood by its conclusion.
The firm was one of four companies named in a lawsuit by the Department of Justice alleging that the firms overbilled government clients for travel expenses. As part of a settlement with the U.S. attorney's office for the Central District of California, the firm agreed to pay $3.37 million to settle the suit.
