Reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission give only a glimpse of the vast operations headed by the intensely private Saul family.
Chevy Chase Bank consolidated its status as the biggest locally owned bank last year by winning the contract to install ATMs in the Metro system. Saul's hotel division owns 18 properties, 11 of them in the Washington region, and continued to grow, boosting its occupancy as the economy improved. The Saul REIT also owns dozens of other office, residential and land investments around the country.
The most visible Saul projects, however, are private ventures. They include the newly opened row of pricey boutiques on Wisconsin Avenue called the Collection at Chevy Chase and the adjacent Chevy Chase Center, which is nearing completion of a total reconstruction. Both are owned by Saul's Chevy Chase Land Co., which built the elegant addition to the Kennedy-Warren apartments on Connecticut Avenue near the National Zoo. Farther up that avenue, another signature project is in the works: The company got approval last fall for redevelopment of the Chevy Chase Lake East shopping center and adjacent properties.
Though shares in the B.F. Saul Real Estate Investment Trust are closely held, the company files public financial reports because it has bonds that are publicly traded.

B.F. Saul Real Estate Investment Trust is the semi-public centerpiece of the ultra-private empire headed by B. Francis Saul II. It's not actually a real estate investment trust, or REIT; it gave up that tax-favored status long ago. It is the principal owner of Chevy Chase Bank and shares its high-rise headquarters in Bethesda with the bank and sister corporations including the publicly traded Saul Centers, which is an REIT; the B. F. Saul Hotel Division; and other Saul ventures.
