While other banks in the region pursue mega-mergers and consolidations, Burke & Herbert continues to march to its own traditional drummer. Its hallmark is friendly, personal banking services and maintaining customer loyalty, and there was no change in that approach last year.
The bank is, however, casting its eye further afield from its Alexandria base. Having made its first foray into Prince William County by opening a branch there in 2004, it is looking at three or four more locations there and expects to open another branch by the end of this year, according to E. Hunt Burke, the president and chief operating officer. Moreover, the bank is hoping to tap the Korean American market — "a fantastic market," Burke said — and is looking at locations in Annandale where many people from that community live. Toward that end, it hired Ginny Kim, formerly of Woori America Bank, as vice president and director, international banking.
Burke, who is among the fifth generation of his family serving in executive positions at the bank, noted with pride that it is still among the top-rated financial institutions in the country for safety, according to Weiss Ratings and other agencies. "We're just doing what we enjoy doing, which is basic banking," he said. "I'd like to say it's exciting, but we've got a good formula, so we're sticking to it."
