Late last year, the company decided to restructure its business to focus on its hospital operations and medical equipment sales, where it sees the greatest profit potential. That has meant shutting down its health-care products distribution division, which marketed off-the-shelf medical equipment and pharmaceuticals.
In November, the company completed its first sale in China of a Da Vinci Surgical System, a minimally invasive robotic surgical system manufactured by Intuitive Surgical Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif.
Also last year, the company closed on an $8 million long-term financing package with the International Finance Corp. of the World Bank. The deal provides capital for expansion of Chindex's United Family Hospital network. That network also received formal accreditation from the Joint Commission International, which accredits hospitals, for its operations in Beijing. United Family is the only network in North Asia with such accreditation.
