2006 is the 100th anniversary of Clark Construction, which handles projects ranging from interior renovations of small buildings to constructing sports stadiums, entertainment complexes, military facilities, roads and mixed-use projects. One of its biggest challenges will be completing the new $300 million-plus baseball stadium in Southeast Washington on time and within budget. It beat out Turner Construction of New York for the job.
Last year it also completed the $100 million Music Center at Strathmore and the $92 million extension of Metro's Blue Line to Largo.
The company is at work on a sprawling new headquarters for the Department of Transportation in Southeast, and on two contracts at Dulles International Airport to build automated people movers and tunnels.
Other new or ongoing projects in the area include: a $54.6 million contract for the Food and Drug Administration's consolidation at White Oak in Maryland; a $43 million expansion of Metro's Brentwood service and inspection yard; a $34.6 million contract to build two aircraft maintenance hangars at the Marine Corps Air Facility in Quantico; and a $31 million parking garage addition at Union Station.
It is developing a new trophy office building "on speculation," without a tenant lined up, at Third and E streets SW in the Capitol Hill area.
Clark Residential is building several condominium and apartment buildings for the JBG Cos. and others across the metropolitan region, and Shirley Contracting has been working for years on rebuilding the highway interchange known as the Mixing Bowl.
Clark lost a bid to widen high-occupancy vehicle lanes on Interstate 95 to three "high-occupancy toll" lanes and link them to the Capital Beltway.
Outside the Washington area, Clark is general contractor and construction manager for the $300 million Island Gardens luxury hotel tower, condos and retail complex on Miami's Biscayne Bay; the $90 million Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live, a $4.2 billion mixed-use center being built next to the Staples Center; and a $25 million project at the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Fla. It is working on a massive new medical center in Los Angeles; a major expansion at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago; and an $80 million contract to renovate City Hall in Pasadena, Calif.
