The biggest news of the year for Dialysis came in March 2005, when it bought its parent company, Medicore Inc. of Hialeah, Fla., in a $152 million stock deal. The deal closed in October. Medicore had owned 57 percent of its subsidiary but agreed to be purchased by Dialysis for 5.3 million Dialysis shares.
The goal of the deal was to reduce Dialysis's expenses through more integrated systems. The deal also infused Dialysis with cash. The firm gained $9 million from Medicore's balance sheet, which was much needed, as Dialysis had only $1.5 million on hand as of the end of September 2004. The deal was intended to give the firm room to grow, as it costs about $1 million to build a new dialysis center and even more to buy an existing facility.
Last year, the company announced the opening or development of facilities in South Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Ohio.
