General Dynamics' efforts to expand into information technology helped the company reach $21.24 billion in revenue and a profit of $1.46 billion in 2005. The company announced five acquisitions last year, all information technology firms. The largest, the pending $2.2 billion acquisition of Fairfax-based Anteon International Corp., could make General Dynamics competitive in the growing government technology market, industry analysts have said.
The company counted among its most significant accomplishments last year the testing of an Army communications system, known as the Warfighter Information Network-Tactical, or WIN-T. The program is a radio system that transmits data, voice and video communications and is scheduled to be deployed in 2012. Parts of the program could be deployed earlier, according to the company.
But it wasn't a good year for all of General Dynamics. The company told submarine workers in Connecticut and Rhode Island that it would lay off as many as 2,400 employees in 2006 and warned that thousands more jobs could be lost if the shipyards do not get more work.
Also, a federal jury in Greenbelt ordered the company to pay $129.9 million to its onetime partner, Final Analysis Communication Services Inc., a small satellite firm. The jury sided with Lanham-based Final Analysis, which alleged that General Dynamics violated agreements to help the company develop a $400 million project to launch low-flying satellites for data transmissions, including paging and text message services. In April of this year, a federal judge reduced the amount General Dynamics was required to pay to $19.87 million.
