Genworth made its debut as a separate company in May 2004 with an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. But for decades it was a heavyweight consumer insurance and financial services provider under the broad umbrella of General Electric. GE sold the remainder of its stake in the company in March of this year.
Genworth was added to the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index last November.
In the past year, it has named James Riepe, the former vice chairman of the T. Rowe Price Group, and Nancy Karch, former senior partner of McKinsey & Co., to its board of directors.
In January, Genworth bought Continental Life Insurance Co. of Brentwood, Tenn., a Medicare insurance provider, for $145 million.
