Goodwill agencies across the United States provided job-search and placement support and helped organize job fairs for thousands of people displaced by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) created a job bank, for exclusive access by Goodwill, with employment opportunities at dozens of AHIP member companies nationwide. Goodwill also helped provide free voice-mail boxes to Gulf Coast residents displaced by the hurricanes in collaboration with Community Voice Mail National and Cisco Systems.
Goodwill concluded a three-year study funded by the Commerce Department that found that providing low-wage workers with access to computers at home significantly increased worker-retention rates and helped lead to higher wages for those workers. The results suggested that post-employment support is as vital to success in the workplace as pre-employment support. Low-wage workers need the maximum amount of resources and tools available not only to sustain employment, but also to increase their opportunities for advancement, the study showed.
With funding from the Hitachi Foundation's Making Work Work initiative, Goodwill published an employee-retention guide designed to help small- to medium-size employers keep their employees.
