MedStar has nearly 5,000 physicians affiliated with its services. It serves a half-million patients each year. In addition to hospitals, the organization also runs assisted-living facilities, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. MedStar's sports-medicine division picked up a prominent new customer in 2005: the Washington Nationals. The team appointed MedStar doctors to be the club's physicians, following a similar move by the Baltimore Ravens.
In November, MedStar decided to integrate its fundraising operations into a centralized system for the entire network. MedStar hired Kintera Contact Relationship Management and Kintera Prospect Relationship Management to help it search for donors.
In December, MedStar added six members to its board, including HealthExtras Inc. Chairman Edward S. Civera and William R. Roberts, president of Verizon Maryland Inc.
