Last year, the company bought property in two new markets outside the Washington area: San Antonio and Colorado Springs. It spent $364 million on acquisitions, $100 million more than it did in 2004. Its acquisitions last year included 40 office buildings and 267 acres of land around properties it already owns that can be developed in the future.
Corporate Office has some 1.1 million square feet of office space under construction, more than ever before.
Among its projects are buildings at Westfields in Chantilly, which is a major office park popular with defense contractors; the redevelopment of a warehouse into a high-end office building in Anne Arundel County; and a project in St. Mary's County. Its major office park at Columbia Gateway has continued to add defense contractors as tenants.
Randall M. Griffin, who last year was named president and chief executive, said the company is studying 10 cities where it might open operations next year.
"We need to absorb what we have, and we still have a lot of developments to do this year," said Griffin, who had been the firm's chief operating officer and president since September 1998.
