In January of this year, Orbimage finalized the acquisition of Denver-based Space Imaging LLC for $58.5 million, less some adjustments. The combined company was named GeoEye, which calls itself the world's largest commercial satellite imagery firm.
Much of GeoEye's business is with the U.S. government. Last fall, the company signed a one-year agreement with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that will enable scientists from that agency, as well as NASA, to use data from the OrbView-2 satellite. In 2007, GeoEye plans to launch a satellite that will serve the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.
