Radio One is navigating the slowdown in the radio industry by reaching into other media. Liggins has launched several efforts to diversify Radio One from a pure radio company into a catchall for black consumers. He hopes that strategy will mean growth for the company despite increased competition from satellite radio, Internet radio and MP3 players.
The company's latest effort was to launch the first national talk radio network targeting a black audience. The network, which features politician Al Sharpton and professor and author Michael Eric Dyson, was the result of synergy between Radio One and popular morning show host Tom Joyner's Reach Media Inc. Radio One bought control of Joyner's company in late 2004.
Radio One has also begun investing in Web sites associated with the company's radio stations and has continued to build Silver Spring-based TV One LLC, which is owned by Radio One in partnership with cable company Comcast Corp., satellite operator DirectTV Group and venture capitalists. The television network, which has been operating for two years, now reaches more than 25 million viewers, but it is still a relatively small player among cable channels.
In February of this year, Radio One announced that its fourth-quarter profit plummeted nearly 50 percent from a year earlier. The company's stock fell as analysts expressed concern that Liggins's efforts to diversify beyond the slow-growth radio business would take a long time to pay off.
